Alix Ziff, Director

Masters in Global African Studies


  • UC Santa Cruz:  Played NCAA volleyball 
  • UCLA: Assisted in research on economic development at UCLA, studied abroad at the University of Cape Town, and graduated from UC San Diego.
  • UCSD: Earned her B.A. in Political Science and International Relations with a minor in African Studies. During her time at UCSD, she researched public access to education in South Sudan: analyzing the roles of colonialism, political contention, and ethnic divisions in the provision of education.
  • Stanford:  Continued her studies on social and political obstacles to development. She is interested in the lasting effects of colonialism on African governance and development, political contention in ethnically diverse African states, and the role of international institutions and law in the protection of the human rights of refugees and IDPs within and from Africa. Alix’s initial interest in African studies resulted from her love of African historical fiction.

HIGH SCHOOL: Alix graduated from Mira Costa High School in 2012. In high school Alix was an honor student for all 4 years in addition to winning the Academic Excellence award and the Teacher's Choice award. Alix also won the Most Inspirational award at her high school.

PERSONAL: Born and raised in Manhattan Beach, California.  Alix's parents are Hali and Jay. She has one sibling, Danie. In her free time Alix enjoys going to the beach.

  • A 2013 graduate of Palos Verdes High School in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.
  • Considered one of the top setting recruits in the nation
  • A 2013 Volleyball Magazine/Mizuno second-team All-American
  • Played for Southern California Volleyball Club and won two gold medals (2010, 2012) and tournament MVP honors (2012) at the U.S. Junior Olympic championships
  • Named the Bay League’s Most Outstanding Player at Palos Verdes as a junior
  • Led the Sea Kings to a school-record 29 victories with 928 assists as a senior captain
  • Named 2013 Daily Breeze Player of the Year as the top player in Los Angeles County's South Bay region • All-CIF Southern Section Division I first-team selection
